A shop worker is seriously ill in hospital after he was threatened with a syringe and collapsed during a robbery.

A shop worker is seriously ill in hospital after he was threatened with a syringe and collapsed during a robbery.

A suspect in his 30s was arrested during the raid in Spar on James St, Dublin, shortly before 10pm yesterday.

A Garda spokesman said two staff members were threatened by a lone assailant.

“A struggle took place and gardaí were alerted,” he said.

“The suspected offender was arrested at the scene and is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

“He has been taken to James Hospital, where he is being treated for a leg injury.

“One of the staff members, a man in his 30s, collapsed at the scene and was also taken to St James Hospital where he is in a serious condition.”
