Jack remains the most popular name for baby boys in Ireland, marking five years at the top spot.

New figures from the CSO show that Emily hit number one for baby girls' names for the first time last year.

A total of 2.2% of all baby boys registered in the Republic last year were called Jack, while for girls, Emily accounted for 1.6% of the total registered.

James, Sean, Daniel and Conor rounded off the top five boys names in 2011, while Sophie, Emma, Grace and Lily make up the girls.

There were four first-time entries to the top 100 for boys - Mason, Donnacha, Tommy and Zach.

For girls there was just one new entry to the top 100 with Lexi climbing from 102nd place in 2010 to 96th last year, but the name climbing most places in the year was Michaela.

In all, 38,223 boys and 36,427 girls were born in Ireland in 2011.
