The army bomb squad was called to a lab in Co Louth this afternoon after the alarm was raised over chemicals which were thought to have become unsafe.

The army bomb squad was called to a lab in Co Louth this afternoon after the alarm was raised over chemicals which were thought to have become unsafe.

The team arrived at Dundalk Institute of Technology shortly after 4pm. They evacuated the area and then and examined a quantity of celloidin wool, which can become unstable as it dries out.

The team declared the material to be safe, but removed it from the area, and later carried out a controlled explosion.

The scene was declared safe before 5pm.
