The Government's tax take at the end of June was €500 million better than expected, according to the latest exchequer figures published this evening.

Three of the four main taxes are outperforming expectations, corporation tax is €274 million ahead of target, while income tax is €215 million better than expected.

But the figures also show that government departments are overspending by €200 million.

Despite that - Derek Moran from the Department of Finance says overall the figures are encouraging:

"These are a very strong set of figures, we are pretty much where we expected to be with the pluses and minuses across the budget. The tax revenue performance is positive, expenditure is not far off", he said

"…These are a positive set of results that will give us at this juncture, six months out, confidence that we are going to hit the target for the year, at this stage without any surprises"
