Several local authorities across the country have elected new mayors tonight.

Several local authorities across the country have elected new mayors tonight.

Former rugby international and Labour Councillor Gerry McLoughlin is the new mayor of Limerick he takes over from Fine Gael's Jim Long.

In Donegal, the first ever Labour Councillor has been elected as Lord Mayor in Frank McBrearty Junior.

While in Dublin, Fine Gael councillor Naoise O Muirí has been chosen for the office, replacing outgoing Labour mayor Andrew Montague.

Fianna Fáil councillors refused to take part in the vote claiming Dublin needs a directly elected mayor with executive powers.
