Mulherin accuses dress-down TDs of lacking maturity

A Fine Gael TD has today reignited the debate about how our politicians dress in the Dáil.

Michelle Mulherin is putting forward a motion at next week's Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting to implement a dress code in the Dáil.

She wants to see the likes of t-shirts, jeans and runners banned from the house.

Deputy Mulherin said that the manner in which some elected representatives dress shows a "lack of maturity".

"It sends out a message about respect for ourselves, respect for the institution, which is the parliament, and the country," she said.

"And the best foot forward is to be appropriately dressed. At the end of the day, we're all big boys and girls and really, we're not schoolkids."
