Some 56,000 students missed school every day in the period of 2009 to 2010, according to new figures from the National Educational Welfare Board published today.

The figures show a slight reduction overall in absenteeism, while a pilot project in the Dublin 8 area - where chronic non-attendance was targeted - resulting in a 42% reduction.

Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald welcomed the progress.

"We're certainly seeing improvement, but it remains a serious concern that 56,000 of our young people miss school every day," she said.

"So there is still work to be done - but great progress, and we know how to move forward now."
