Report shows reduction in school absenteeism
Some 56,000 students missed school every day in the period of 2009 to 2010, according to new figures from the National Educational Welfare Board published today.
The figures show a slight reduction overall in absenteeism, while a pilot project in the Dublin 8 area - where chronic non-attendance was targeted - resulting in a 42% reduction.
Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald welcomed the progress.
"We're certainly seeing improvement, but it remains a serious concern that 56,000 of our young people miss school every day," she said.
"So there is still work to be done - but great progress, and we know how to move forward now."
