Kilkenny man accused of assaulting mother

A 31-year-old man has appeared at Kilkenny District court this afternoon, charged with assault causing serious harm to his mother.

The court heard that Niall Stapleton with an address at Kilfane, Thomastown, Co Kilkenny made no reply when charged at Thomastown garda station last night.

Siobhan Stapleton, 51, died on her way to hospital as a result of injuries sustained at her home in Kilfane on Friday last.

Mr Stapleton's solicitor outlined to the court that her client had a history of mental illness.

There was no application for bail and Niall Stapleton has been remanded in custody to appear in court again on June 5.

Today, the judge asked that whatever psychiatric and medical attention was available, be afforded to the accused at his place of detention.
