Naval Service detain Spanish fishing vessel

The Naval Service vessel LE Aisling has detained a Spanish registered fishing vessel approximately 175 nautical miles off the coast of Mizen Head, a spokesperson said.

The detention last nnight was in relation to an alleged breach of technical fishing regulations.

The vessel is currently under escort by the LE Aisling to Castletownbere and is expected to arrive alongside at 1pm this afternoon; the vessel will then be handed over to the gardaí.

The Naval Service have carried out 498 boardings, issued 25 warnings and detained eight vessels so far in 2012 and carried out 1,313 boardings and eight detentions of vessels off the Irish Coast in 2011.
