A full technical examination is being carried out at house in Kerry following a fire which claimed the lives of a father and child.

The fire broke out shortly after 2am in Killeen Heights in Tralee.

A man in his 30s and his five-year-old daughter died in the blaze.

A woman in her late 20s, believed to be the mother of the child, escaped by jumping out of a window.

She is currently being treated in Kerry General Hospital after she suffered a broken leg in the fall.

Gardaí are investigating the incident but say early indications are that the fire was accidental.

Mayor of Tralee Grace O'Donnell said the people of Tralee would give the family as much support as possible.

"We're just so devastated and our sympathies go out to the family," she said.

"Where this family were living is a wonderful community and I'm sure they'll be there for the family. The people of Tralee will be there to help in whatever way we can."
