A man has gone on trial for the murder of his girlfriend's three and a half-month-old baby boy at the home they shared in Co Wexford.

Philip Doyle (aged 34), of Tinakilly, Aughrim, Co Wicklow denies killing Ross Murphy at Creagh Desmesne, Gorey on April 5, 2005.

The jury has heard the accused initially gave no explanation for the infant's injuries but later told gardaí he had tripped while holding the child.

In its opening statement the prosecution said it is their case that this was no accident.
