Sinn Féin to table emergency motion to repeal household charge
Sinn Féin is to table an Emergency Motion at tonight's meeting of Dublin City Council calling for the repeal of the Household Charge.
The Local Government Management Agency said on Sunday that 805,000 people registered to pay the €100 fee up to Saturday's midnight deadline.
Yesterday, Junior Minister Fergus O'Dowd said that the refusal of some people to comply with the Household Charge will result in service cuts for many.
But Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor, Mícheál Mac Donncha, says funding for local authorities has already been cut by the government:
"We have a situation where local councils including Dublin City council could face further and very serious cuts to services and even jobs in 2012", he said.
"we're calling on the City Council to urge the government to repeal the household charge legislation and to introduce a supplementary budget to fund local government in 2012"
