Court gives convicted garda killer another four months for escape

Convicted garda killer Martin McDermott has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court today on charges connected to his arrest in Derry last Friday.

McDermott, from Raphoe, had the previous day escaped from prison in County Cavan where was he was serving seven years for the manslaughter of Garda Gary McLoughlin in Burt in 2009.

He was sentenced to four months today and it emerged that a garda arrest warrant to return McDermott to the Republic of Ireland cannot be served until he has finished his sentence in the North.
