Elderly man stable after 300ft fall on Mayo mountain

A man in his late 60s has been airlifted to University College Hospital in Galway after falling more than 100 metres, while climbing the Mweelrea Mountain on the Mayo/Galway border.

A man in his late 60s has been airlifted to University College Hospital in Galway after falling more than 100 metres, while climbing the Mweelrea Mountain on the Mayo/Galway border.

The accident happened yesterday at around 3pm and the Mayo Mountain rescue team were dispatched to the scene.

Due to the bad weather, the rescue team had to stay with the man overnight on the mountain.

He was airlifted this morning to hospital in Galway where he is now believed to be in a stable condition.
