Dublin City Council has extended the contract for construction of the controversial Poolbeg incinerator until the end of August.

The council said the extension is to allow a number of regulatory issues to be finalised and to allow the company Covanta to have funding in place.

The company will have to be in a position to commit to work resuming before November 5.

A number of extensions have already been granted to Covanta for the 600,000 tonne facility, which is estimated will cost €350m.
