Spanish tourist in hospital after Cork city assault

A Spanish man is being treated in hospital after he was beaten with a golf club in Cork overnight.

The victim, who is believed to be in his 40s, was walking down White Street close to the city centre with two friends at around 10pm when they were set upon by a group of teenagers who were drinking in the area.

The man received head injuries in the attack, in which it is believed a golf club was used.

The man is being treated in Cork University Hospital for serious injuries, but is now reported to be stable.

Gardaí arrested a number of youths following the attack. They were brought to the Bridewell garda station for questioning.

They have since been released without charge, and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

The scene of the attack has been sealed off for a technical examination.
