Man 'chasing children with hatchet' tasered by police

Police in Derry deployed a Taser after a man allegedly armed with a hatchet chased a group of children.

The incident in the Clonmeen Drive area was reported at around 9.50pm last night.

Armed response officers were sent to the scene and a 44-year-old man was arrested.

Residents at the scene told police that a second man had also been involved. A 42-year-old man was taken into custody a short time later.

One man remained in police custody today while the second was released on bail.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information is asked to contact police.

In line with normal procedure, the Police Ombudsman's office has been notified of the Taser discharge.
