Man arrested after nursing-home death was known to victim

Gardaí have launched a murder investigation, following the death of a woman at a nursing home in Waterford.

Eighty-two-year-old Veronica Vollrath was found dead in her room yesterday morning by staff at Killure Bridge Nursing Home, where she was a resident.

A post mortem was conducted on her body. Gardaí say the investigation has now been upgraded to murder.

A 46-year-old man who knew the deceased, but who had no connection with the nursing home, was arrested yesterday at Dublin Airport as part of the investigation.

He is being held by gardaí in Waterford city.
