Train journeys will set commuters back more from this morning onwards.

The prices of DART and commuter service tickets rise by 6% and 6.7% respectively today, after the National Transport Authority agreed Irish Rail could increase its fares in the new year.

Spokesperson for Iarnroid Éireann Jane Cregan said passengers will have to dig a little deeper right across the board.

"All DART and commuter rail fares will be increasing from today," she said.

"DART fares will be increasing by 6% and commuter fares will be increasing by 6.7%.

"That is all services in the greater Dublin area, coming in from Dundalk, Gorey, Carlow, Portlaoise, Athlone and Longford, as well as the DART line."
