Christmas period sees rise in rape and sexual assaults
The Rape Crisis Centre is warning that more cases of rape and sexual assault take place over the Christmas period than at any other time of the year.
Last year, over 1,700 people contacted the National 24-hour helpline for rape and sexual assault during December and January.
Chief Executive of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, Ellen O'Malley-Dunlop, said it's worthwhile making note of the helpline number.
Ms O'Malley-Dunlop said: "We hope you never have to use it, but key in the 1800 727 8888 national 24-hour helpline number for victims of rape and sexual assault.
"Key that into your phone. Even if you are a friend of somebody whom you want to help and don't know what to do, call the number. Round the clock there is a trained person at the end of the line who will know what to do."
