Social Justice Ireland stated today that the latest proposals to address the economic woes of the European Union are missing the point.

The group says decisions reached in Brussels last week on a fiscal compact are focused on saving banks and bondholders, rather than tackling the underlying economic problems of member states.

Social Justice Ireland said that EU leaders are relying on the false assumption that the current crisis was caused by excessive Government borrowing.

The group said that governments should be forcing reckless financial institutions to share in the pain.
