HSE in negotiations for first dedicated Air Ambulance helicopter

It is understood a deal is in sight that would give Ireland its first dedicated helicopter Air Ambulance service.

Medical experts have estimated that four lives are lost, and 16 people are left permanently disabled every year, because of the lack of such a service.

The HSE is in advanced negotiations with providers for the programme and the deal is expected to be finalised in January.

Pat McCarthy, chairman of the charity Air Ambulance Ireland, said it is crucial that this service is set up.

Mr McCarthy said: "The Air Corps and the Sea Rescue are providing the service as best they can, where they can, but obviously that is not their function.

"History has proven in Europe, and particularly in the UK, that a dedicated Air Ambulance does save lives."
