Govt withdraws group's funds after 'disproportionate' spending

It has been anounced that Government funding for the voluntary group People with Disabilities in Ireland will be completely withdrawn at the end of the year.

In a statement, Junior Minister for Disability Kathleen Lynch said that the vast majority of the money allocated to the group is being spent "disproportionately".

She said that following a value-for-money review, the largest proportion of PWDI's annual budget has been spent on the operation of its office headquarters and on administration rather than on the creation of programmes and services which would directly benefit people with disabilities.

The Minister added that people with disabilities were benefiting very little from the allocation.
