Health Minister warns of nursing home closures, €50 medical-card charge

The Health Minister Dr James Reilly has warned he may have to close nearly 1,000 hospital beds, shut up to 40 nursing homes, and impose a €50 charge for medical cards in next month's Budget.

Dr Reilly has warned Government backbenchers about the choices facing him ahead of another special Cabinet meeting today to finalise the Budget.
