Gallagher doing well in early tallies in Cavan

The sorting of ballot papers is well underway at the Cavan/Monaghan count centre at Drumalee, County Cavan.

Boxes from Carrickmacross, South Monaghan, Bailieborough and Castleblayney have been opened.

It is thought it will be late this afternoon before the first results of the votes are known, but early indications are that Sean Gallagher is doing well, as are Michael D. Higgins and Martin McGuinness.

At the Cavan count centre, Sinn Féin Deputy Caoimhghin O'Caolain said, despite a generally low turnout, it looks like some parts of the constituency had a higher than average turnout.
