Donegal islanders to vote today

Voters living on the five islands off the coast of Donegal will go to the polls today to vote in the presidential election.

Voters living on the five islands off the coast of Donegal will go to the polls today to vote in the presidential election.

The 761 people of Arranmore, Gola, Inishbofin, Inishfree and Tory Island get to vote three days ahead of the rest of the country, which will go to the polls on Thursday.

Returning officers who run the election arrange the early voting on some of the country's islands to ensure sufficient lead-time so that bad weather does not delay getting ballot boxes back to the mainland for the count.

Voters living on islands off the coast of Mayo will go to the polls tomorrow, while those living on islands off Galway will vote on Wednesday.
