A key witness in a murder trial told a jury at the Central Criminal Court today that her boyfriend tried to defend himself with a shovel before being stabbed to death.

Daniel McCormack (aged 23), of Kenure Park, Rush, Co Dublin has pleaded not guilty to the murder of James Joyce (aged 20) of St Cronins Close, Swords, Co Dublin in July 22, 2010.
