Kildare man admits killing Athy woman

A 49-year-old Kildare man has admitted killing a young mother in Athy last May.

Michael McDonald of Barnhill Road, Castledermot appeared at the Central Criminal Court today and pleaded not guilty to murder, but guilty to the manslaughter of Breda Cummins at Michael Dooley Terrace in Athy.

He has also denied assaulting another man at the same address.

The DPP told the court that it was not accepting the plea of diminished responsibility and provocation, and the murder trial will begin on Thursday.
