Limerick murder victim 'may have known attacker'

Gardaí in Limerick have confirmed that a man whose body was found in the city yesterday died from multiple stab wounds.

The body of 54-year-old Martin Purcell was found at an apartment at Wickham Street at 11am yesterday.

A full-scale murder investigation is now underway and gardaí are looking to establish Mr Purcell's movements since Monday.

Superintendent Frank O'Brien said the victim may have known his attacker.

"There is nothing at this point in time that indicates any kind of violent entry into the flat," he said.

"We believe that Martin had a number of friends that lived in the building."
