Almost 1,500 secure internships under JobBridge scheme

Almost 1,500 people have taken up internships under the Government's controversial 'JobBridge' scheme.

The Department of Social Protection has said it is changing the rules on entry to the programme to allow for easier entry for those finishing training courses.

The internship scheme pays those taking up positions an extra €50 a week on top of their dole.

But the addition of some jobs - like those offered by supermarkets and hotels - gave rise to criticism that it provides employers with the option of cheaper labour.

Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton, who is in Cork today, insisted thats JobBridge has been successful in its first 12 weeks, with 1,470 individuals already on internships.

A further 2,420 opportunities are currently listed on the JobBridge website.

The Minister said measures have been introduced to protect the scheme from abuse, with a strict vetting process in place to ensure offers meet quality requirements.
