The woman, who is in her 60s, was attacked near the Turrets area of Charleville, as she walked home from bingo.

Gardaí say the attacker dragged the woman into the driveway of a house at around a quarter 10.15pm last night, where he beat and sexually assaulted her before fleeing.

The victim, who suffered severe head injuries in the attack, made her way on to the roadway where she got help from a passing motorist.

She was taken to the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital.

The area where the attack took place has now been cordoned off and a forensic examination is underway.
