Gallagher receives first formal nomination

Independent candidate and 'Dragon's Den' personality Sean Gallagher has received his first formal nomination to contest the presidential election.

The businessman received the backing of members of Meath Co Council today.

Later today the members of Leitrim Co Council are also expected to formally nominate the entrepreneur, having given him their provisional support a number of weeks ago.

Writing on his Twitter feed Mr Gallagher said he was "delighted" to have the first formal nomination under his belt.

Meanwhile Mary Davis was today nominated by Sligo Co Council.

Ms Davis, managing director of Special Olympics Europe, was nominated by Independent Councillor Michael Clarke and the proposal got the backing of the majority of councillors at this afternoon's meeting.

All of the Fine Gael members of the council abstained in the vote.

Last Friday, Ms Davis secured her first formal local authority nomination from Galway Co Council.

The candidates need the backing of four local authorities to get on the ballot paper.

The presidential election takes place on October 27.
