Temple Bar assault accused granted bail
A court has heard a Canadian man accused of an assault on a French medic in Temple Bar, Dublin last weekend insists he's innocent of any wrongdoing.
Quebec student Simon Mercier, has been granted bail at the Dublin District Court despite strenuous garda objections.
The court heard 26-year-old French medic Guillaume Osterstock remains in a critical condition in Beaumont Hospital.
Mr Mercier is accused of assault causing harm to Mr Osterstockin the early hours of Sunday morning in Temple Bar.
Garda Barry Duggan today objected to a bail application saying more serious charges may follow and that the student is a flight risk.
He told the court Ireland has no extradition treaty with Canada.
Mr Mercier's solicitor argued that his client is from a good family and will say this is a case of self-defence.
Judge John Lindsay has remanded the 23-year-old tourist in custody with consent to bail until next Tuesday.
