Emergency services and the Navy are responding to what's been described as a major incident involving 22 people off the coast of Co. Cork this evening.

All 22 crewmembers of an overturned yacht are safe and accounted for, off the coast of Baltimore, according to the Coast Guard.

16 of them are clinging to the upturned boat, the others are in a life-raft.

The US-registered yacht capsized near the Fastnet Rock off the west Cork coast at about 6.30pm this evening, while taking part in the Fastnet race.

The Shannon and Waterford-based Coastguard helicopters are en-route, as is naval vessel L.E. Ciara, which is expected to arrive any moment.
