Gardaí have recovered a burned out car they believe may have been used during the abduction of a post office worker, his partner and their child in Drogheda, Co. Louth overnight.

A number of men broke into the official's home last night, and this morning forced him to take money from his workplace and bring it to a specified location.

Shortly after 1pm, the man's partner and child were released unharmed in Damastown in Dublin.

Justice Minister Alan Shatter has requested a detailed report from the authorities on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile, Superintendant John Gilligan is asking members of the public, who saw anything suspicious in the Drogheda or Damastown areas to contact Gardaí.
