A teenager accused of assaulting a Killarney man in Australia has been granted conditional bail.

Timothy McCarthy (aged 41) from Spa, Killarney, Co Kerry suffered cerebral damage after he was punched in Canberra in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mr McCarthy was discovered lying unconscious on the ground in the Civic area of Canberra following Sunday night's attack.

He was rushed to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

Mr McCarthy remains in a serious but stable condition according to hospital spokespeople.

Today, Daniel Byrne (aged 18) from Canberra reappeared in court charged in connection with the assault.

He has pleaded not guilty and was granted bail on eight conditions, including having to report to police twice daily, and staying away from certain individuals and areas.

Mr Byrne will also have to observe a strict curfew.

He will appear in court again in October.
