'SOLAS' to replace FÁS

FÁS is to be disbanded and replaced with a new agency called SOLAS.

Education Minister Ruairí Quinn said the new training and education authority will become the governing body for the VECs.

Other parts of FÁS will be incorporated into the Department of Social Protection.

Minister Quinn said the change would ensure jobseekers get the skills needed for the 21st century labour market.
