Man charged after Australian attack that left Irishman critically ill

A young man has appeared in court in Australia charged in connection with an attack on an Irishman in Canberra last weekend.

Forty-one-year-old Tim McCarthy from Spa in Killarney, Co Kerry suffered serious head injuries in the attack, and is in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

Eighteen-year-old local man Daniel Byrne was arrested in the city's Franklin suburb yesterday and has been charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to Mr McCarthy in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He was refused bail and is due back in court on Friday.
