Boy dies in Kerry hotel pool

A boy has died following an incident in a hotel pool in Co Kerry.

It is believed the child, who is understood to have been five years old, was found in the pool of the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney at around 11am today.

Attempts were made to resuscitate the child at the scene and he was transferred by ambulance to Kerry General Hospital in Tralee where he later died.

It is believed the boy was holidaying with his family in Kerry.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Gleneagle Hotel said they are deeply saddened by today’s events and that their thoughts are with the family at this time.

The hotel said the pool was fully supervised at the time of the accident with two qualified lifeguards on duty, and that all the appropriate steps were taken. It said all the relevant authorities had been notified.

The pool will remain closed today as a mark of respect for the family and will reopen tomorrow.
