Westmeath club in breach of MEAS alcohol code
A nightclub in Co. Westmeath has been found to have breached the MEAS code on the responsible promotion of alcohol.
A member of the public complained, through Facebook, about a promotion Genesis nightclub in Athlone advertised as part of a Rag Week event.
The advertisement included a promise of free tequila for customers and stated: "Gona be messy madness – who's up for some???”
The promotion has been found to be in breach of the MEAS Code of Practice on the Naming, Packaging and Promotion of Alcoholic Drinks.
Efforts were made by the nightclub to remedy the breach as soon as it was brought to management’s attention, but the promotion was nonetheless found to have breached guidelines.
MEAS (Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society Limited) is a drinks industry organisation established to promote social responsibility within the industry. Its code of practice is subscribed to by all the major drinks companies; the Irish Hotels Federation; the Restaurant Association of Ireland; Superquinn; Lidl Ireland GmbH; the Musgrave Group; BWG; RGDATA; and the National Off-Licence Association.
