FG to pick presidential candidate
Fine Gael will decide today on the party's presidential candidate.
The party must decide whether Pat Cox, Mairead McGuinness or Gay Mitchell is their best hope in the race to the Áras this autumn.
Initially a four-horse race, the departure of Avril Doyle two days ago has left this as a tight battle between the remaining three.
The decision by Environment Minister Phil Hogan to pose for photographs on Thursday with Pat Cox is seen by many as a message of who the leadership wants.
Polling by the party is understood to have Mr Cox and Mairead McGuinness neck and neck, with Mr Mitchell coming up third.
The three candidates will make final pitches to the electoral college this afternoon. A result is expected by 5.30pm today.
