Gardaí in Cork are appealing for witnesses to a fatal road crash which occurred last night.

A 31-year-old motorcyclist was in a collision with a car at about 8.30pm last night on the Kilumney to Crossbarry road at Gurranes, Innishannon, Co Cork.

The biker was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

The road remains closed to traffic pending a technical examination and diversions are in place.

Meanwhile in Co Westmeath gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a road crash near Moate yesterday afternoon that claimed the life of a woman in her 60s.

The woman was seen driving the wrong way eastbound on the westbound carriageway of the M6 before the crash.

She died after her car collided head-on with another car which was being driven by a woman in her 30s.

She is being treated at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore where her condition is described as stable.

Gardaí said 89 people have been killed so far this year on Irish roads, including eight motorcyclists.
