Kenny: Hiring family members 'not good practice'

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has criticised a number of TDs who have defied orders on the hiring of family members as staff.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has criticised a number of TDs who have defied orders on the hiring of family members as staff.

Around two dozen deputies, including some Government Ministers, have hired family members as parliamentary assistants, secretaries and drivers.

The positions have been filled despite Fine Gael pledging to end cronyism and Labour ordering deputies not to hire family members or co-opt them to Council seats.

But Enda Kenny has said he does not approve, but it is not an area he has control over.

Mr Kenny said: "It is not good practice to appoint a family member, but I have to say that these are personal appointments.

"They are not Government appointments, they do not have to be approved by Government, they are personal appointments under the Oireachtas scheme."
