A man slashed a garda across the face and neck when he threatened him at knifepoint and hijacked a garda traffic corps jeep in Cork city yesterday.

He drove to the airport, broke down the perimeter fence and drove on to the runway where he then hijacked an Airport Fire Service jeep and drove towards a parked Aer Lingus Airbus.

He was running at gardaí armed with a knife and wearing just his underwear, when members of the Regional Support Unit Tasered him.

He was brought to Cork University Hospital for psychiatric assessment last night and has since been returned to custody in Togher garda station for questioning.
