One of the stallions Queen Elizabeth was due to see at the National Stud in Kildare town tomorrow has died.

Verglas, who is one of the top stallions at the National Stud, died yesterday afternoon following a tragic accident.

Preparations have been underway for some time at the National Stud for tomorrow's visit by Queen Elizabeth.

But they have been overshadowed by the death of Verglas, one of top ten sires in Ireland last year.

Staff at the National Stud are said to be distraught at the news of his passing but say tomorrow's visit by the Queen will still go ahead.

She will visit the National Stud in Kildare and make a trip to the Gilltown Stud in Kilcullen also.
