Adams hopes for stronger ties between Ireland and the UK
The Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has expressed hope that the Queen of England's visit here will strengthen ties between Ireland and England.
Writing in the Irish Examiner today, the Louth TD said the visit provides a unique opportunity for Britain to make clear that it wants a new meaningful relationship with Ireland that is built on equality and mutual respect.
The TD also said he has nothing against the Queen being the Queen of England, but that he is against monarchies.
His remarks are in contrast to statements he made during his election campaign in February, when he said the visit was inadvisable and premature.
