SF's Gerry Kelly hurt in crash

Senior Sinn Féin member Gerry Kelly has been taken to hospital after he was injured when a car driven by robbery suspects hit a police vehicle and four others in Belfast.

The North Belfast MLA is not believed to be badly hurt after he was caught up in the accident this afternoon on a slip road of the M1 at Stockman’s Lane as he travelled from a local government count centre at the City Hall.

Police said a shop on the Lisburn Road in south Belfast was robbed of money from the cash till at around 2.40pm and the green Subaru Impreza headed for the Malone Road.

It collided with a police vehicle before hitting four other cars near the busy Stockman’s Lane roundabout.

Police said four men were arrested and money recovered. They are being questioned.

A Sinn Féin spokesman said Mr Kelly had been taken to hospital but was not badly injured.

He topped the poll in the North Belfast Assembly election on Thursday with 6,670 votes.
