Gardaí 'considering' speed limiter suggestion

Gardaí and road safety chiefs say they are considering a suggestion to introduce speed limiters on cars being driven by young people.

South Kerry Coroner Terence Casey made the appeal earlier this week, after hearing the inquest into the deaths of four teenagers who were killed in a crash outside Killarney last August.

It comes ahead of the May Bank Holiday weekend, traditionally a busier and more dangerous time on the country's roads.

Assistant Garda Commissioner in Traffic John Twomey said "everything is being considered" but stressed the focus must remain on driver behaviour and responsibility on our roads.

Speaking at the launch of the Road Safety Authority's May Bank Holiday safey campaign, Asst. Comm. Twomey said gardaí will be focusing on motorists who are using their mobile phone while driving.

"We're asking people to heed the warnings in relation to use of mobile phones, " he said.

"You are four times more likely to be involved in a collision if using a mobile phone while driving."
