Ferry operation finally successful
Two former Aran Island ferries are now on board the freight carrier the Thor Gitta.
Large crowds have been gathering at Galway Docks all day today to watch the progress of the ferry lifting operation which began shortly after 8am.
After a three-week struggle, in the late afternoon The Clann Eagle 1 was successfully placed on board the freight carrier and this evening works are continuing to secure it on deck.
The first ferry, the Clann na nOilean, was successfully lifted onto the deck of the freight carrier on Wednesday.
However complications arose yesterday with making space on board the freight ship for the second ferry boat.
It will be some time tomorrow before the second ferry is fully secured on deck, so it will be tomorrow evening before the Thor Gitta sets sail for Mauritius.
