Some Irish universities are being accused of breaking the law today by putting their researchers, librarians and other staff on temporary contracts.

The Irish Federation of University Teachers, which holds its annual conference today, said up to 4,000 academics on temporary contracts should, by law, have permanent positions.

General Secretary Mike Jennings wants the Education Minister Ruairi Quinn to take action.
